Reading Lists

Eligible Materials

Reading lists can include:

  • Links to the library’s electronic material (e.g. e-journal articles, e-books, streaming video)
  • Links to other web resources (e.g. Youtube)
  • Scanned or digitizing copies of material (provided that they fall within the University’s Fair Dealing Guidelines) 
  • Any other digital materials allowed under the Copyright Act

Photocopies and Scanned Documents

The library will scan materials on behalf of instructors for use in the online reading list system. Scanned copies of readings can be used in reading lists or placed on reserve, provided that they fall within the University’s Fair Dealing Guidelines. They may include:

  • up to 10% of a copyright-protected work (including a literary work, musical score, sound recording, and an audiovisual work)
  • one chapter from a book
  • a single article from a periodical
  • an entire artistic work (including a painting, print, photograph, diagram, drawing, map, chart, and plan) from a copyright-protected work containing other artistic works
  • an entire newspaper article or page
  • an entire single poem or musical score from a copyright-protected work containing other poems or musical scores
  • an entire entry from an encyclopedia, annotated bibliography, dictionary or similar reference work

full citation is required for all photocopied or scanned materials.  Scanned PDFs will be stored in the library’s online reading list system.
